If you want to travel to Australia and you are not an Australian citizen or a Permanent Resident, you will need a valid visa to enter. There are many different types of visas.
Temporary visas allow you to travel and stay in Australia temporarily. Some temporary visas have work rights and some don’t. Temporary visas can be used to study, travel or do business in Australia . Holder must depart Australia when their temporary visa finishes (unless they have applied for another visa onshore).
Permanent visas allow you to travel and stay in Australia permanently. All permanent visas have unrestricted work rights. Permanent visas are valid for 5 years from the date of grant or date of entering Australia. If permanent resident visa expires while the holder is overseas, they will need to appy for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) to be able to travel back to Australia. General skilled visas are one of the most common permanent visas. Other visas include family visas , humanitarian visas etc.
Permanent residents are eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship after meeting eligibility criteria. Australian citizens have right to vote. Further information about citizenship can be found on CITIZENSHIP website.
